I am a nerd and have been waiting for this day. Rolled over as I pulled into my driveway last night for perfect timing. This is also my first Oppo post.

That’s a lot of kilometers (or even more miles)

Nice! How many miles are yours?

I usally have to pull over to get the perfect number.

Less miles! That’s about 250k miles.

About 100k kms are mine (60k miles)

I got it a couple of years ago at 307k kms with just enough clutch left to get it home (with a bit of trouble on the hills and starts)

By my math yesterday morning I thought I was going to have to pull over sometime on my way in this morning, but it worked out perfect as I arrived home last night. Good omen!

I meant if the readout was in miles, it would be a much more traveled car. But yeah, it seemed that since the speedometer prioritizes kms, it was more likely to be those (also because it’s harder to get to 400k miles).

400k miles is 640k kms. Wonder if it’ll go that far! Would take me another 5 years or so at my current rate. It’s a race against rust at this point.

60k miles down, and just 600k km to go!

If I was to just go balls-out building a sleeper, the first gen 3 door CDM only echo hatch would be it. So funny. Congrats on a mammoth milestone.

It is fun to drive. I’ve considered a supercharger but the whole point of this one was supposed to be cheap and efficient so that would kind of spoil that plan.

2005 Toyota echo hatch. They weren’t available in the states.

The volvo is a ‘90 turbo sedan. Sitting unused at the moment. One of these days I might get around to cleaning it up and selling it to free up some space.

I had a Mk3 Jetta that hit 275k miles... previous owner slammed it and the oil pan got road clearanced. The car was a rust bucket, but damn, 275k miles ...

I parted it out and scrapped the shell. Shouldn’t have, if I’d given it an oil pan and some junkyard suspension and some wheel bearings, it’d have been the ideal winter beater/rallycross missile . Ah well.

Is that a Toyota Echo three door hatch? And what’s the story with the red Volvo lurking behind it?

250,000 miles (a unit I am familiar with) is a lot! Amazing that it worked out so well to pull perfectly into your spot.

Welcome aboard! You’ve been a lurker for quite a while, haven’t you? I’m Who, nice to meet you.

Depends on your tuning. You can do forced induction and end up with better fuel consumption.

Yes, echo hatch. Honestly I’d go with the 4 door next time but that’s what the deal was. I swapped in some RS seats which was a huge improvement for a couple hundred bucks (and the driver’s seat that came with it was ‘repaired’ with duct tape. I can imagine how fun that would have been once summer came)

I bought the red volvo for my wife when she finally got her driver’s license about 8 years ago. She insisted on an automatic car to learn on, which we didn’t have, and I balked at the idea... and then that one came up and she liked my suggestion. I got it all sorted out and she drove it for a few years but then she decided she wanted a wagon. Now she’s got a 740 wagon and that one sits lonely and unused beside the garage. I can’t really justify keeping it around, and I should sell it... but I like it, and see lots of possibilities for it but I’m kidding myself if I think I’ll ever have time to get around to it!

Believe it or not, they are from a ‘68 chevelle. Hard to imagine a car that big with wheels that small.

They actually work very well from a functional point of view. I live on a gravel road which they treat with calcium chloride and they keep the hubs nice and clean.

Looks to be in great shape given the KMs and how we like to treat our roads in the winter!

I used to see a green one of these next to my work every day. 3 door hatches are quirky!

My 4runner isn’t too far behind. I think it’s at 390, but to get to 400 is going to take a couple of years at the rate I use it.

Haha, yes, it’s tempting to think you’ll do something with the old Volvo but it probably will just sit. Good on her for choosing the longroof life!

So the Echo was just cheap transportation that happened to work out for you at the time? Mechanically they are very solid and will run forever but they are far from luxurious, which is perfectly fine. What were the seats out of that you put in? The original ones don’t look very stylish, comfortable, or really anything at all. They just look like flat lumps of meh.

Rally of the tall pines (cancelled this year!) is literally a 30 min drive from my house but then I looked into it and it’s like 700 bucks just to enter +++ but that would be fun! I’ve got far more into it than it’s worth to sell but it’s not doing anyone any good slowly rotting away. Someone is likely to get a deal. Unfortunately the wagon I found isn’t turbo but she likes it anyhow! I’m sure it’s just as fast as the outback she thought she was going to have to settle for. (took me 2 years to find the right wagon)

I moved to my current house just over 3 years ago and it’s a long way from anything (deliberate) and I needed something good on fuel to get to work. I always liked these and found a deal on one so I got it. My wife calls it a clown car but she’s just jealous! (or not) Absolutely not luxurious. The only option it has is AC, which doesn’t work (and I don’t care) Manual steering, manual windows. I do wish it had a rear wiper but it has side mirrors (also manual) Seats are from the “RS” trim echo. It basically was a sportier version that didn’t get any performance stuff, but got much better seats, some fancy interior bits and alloy wheels.

I managed to dig up a before and after:

AKA Vitz as well. It was echo in Canada up until 2005 I think, then they came out with the next gen and it was Yaris.

Not sure about all of them, but mine is from Japan.

These were just Canadian market. We later got  the Toyota Platz as the Toyota Echo in sedan and coupe form only while Canada also got a hatch.

That’s worlds better looking probably a lot more comfortable/supportive.

AC was an option? I bet not many came without it. I always forget that the base ones had no power steering. Probably so light it doesn’t really need it. Sounds like something Rally Darkstrike would like. Small basic cars are great but I do prefer electric windows.

But Volvos ARE great for rallying and you happen to have an old and not very valuable Volvo sitting around and live close to a rally stage. . .

Kinja'd!!!1

Not sure how many would have came with it, but aside from that mine is base as base can get so obviously someone cared enough to add it. For all I know it’s a simple repair to get it going but I haven’t bothered to look into it. I don’t drive in traffic so the only days I’m bothered by it is hot-humid-rain scenarios where your choice is to cook, or soak. Manual windows on this aren’t too bad. Just like on a miata you can still reach over and crank them even while you’re driving.

It would be valuable (to me at least) after I did all the work to meet the safety inspection! Alternately, I suppose I could just get some people together and have my own rally. There are plenty of places nearby with light enough traffic you could close the road for a bit and get away with it. Even my road. It peters out into a hydro cut but is very fun and twisty. I would like to try it in a scenario where you could take the whole road without also risking oncoming traffic. Midweek you could go hours without any cars but on the weekends there’s a fair amount of offroad/atv traffic.

Definitely, though I like to have the rear windows cracked to reduce buffeting. And AC is quite nice in Georgia. I have two friends without AC in their cars and it’s not always that bad but sometimes it can be a little uncomfortable.

Get some friends together to close off a backroad and have a time attack! That could be very fun if done safely.
